Some Password Patterns
Just a few interesting password related screens I’ve picked up in my pattern collecting:
Gmail reminds you that you’ve changed your password recently if you try to use your last password. Very helpful when your gmail password is encoded into muscle memory like mine:
Delta shows you how not to design a password error. The message says the password I entered wasn’t 6-20 alphanumeric characters, but that wasn’t actually the error:
Apple pops up an unobtrusive, bulleted list of password requirements as soon as the field gets focus. This avoids some of the problems of the hidden tooltip in the Delta example above, though it’s a bit repetitive with the text in the paragraph.
Dropbox XKCD-ified their password strength indicator. However, anticipating obvious, this is the message they show if you try to enter the exact password from the XKCD password cartoon:
